Performance Management
Performance Management is proven to reduce costs, minimize unplanned outages, and maintain Service Level Agreements (SLAs) by ensuring applications run efficiently, and without degradation.
The Velocity Software products provide full performance management software allowing installations to operate efficiently and at high utilization. By providing full visibility into Operations and applications, installations often run at 10-20% higher utilization helping to reduce their hardware and software expenditures accordingly. By automating many operation functions, installations avoid outages or slowdowns at peak periods. With full instrumentation, alarms, alerts, and analytics, problems are captured, allowing them to be resolved in real time.
There are four critical elements to Performance Management that are fully provided with the Velocity Performance Suite (zVPS):
- Performance analysis to diagnose performance problems in real time with stored historical data.
- Capacity Planning facilities to understand capacity requirements over time.
- Chargeback capabilities with the ability to understand exactly what resource each server/program is consuming.
- Operations support with the ability to alert Operations of any situation that may impact production workloads.
All of the zVPS products are developed with the requirements of Keep it simple and Minimize overhead. zVPS has hundreds of easily navigated screens, graphs and reports. Dashboards are easily created and tailored to meet user requirements. Find out more about the zVPS Suite
Modernization of the z/VM Platform
Velocity Software provides modern, web-based visibility into z/VM, Linux, z/VSE and z/OS as well as applications such as Openshift, MongoDB and Oracle. Our products deliver a leading cloud infrastructure that allows end users control over their servers and server configuration in a safe and secure environment - increasing productivity for both them and the increasingly smaller support staff. Velocity Software also provides modern operational support to alert Operators/Administrators to any situation that could impact the environment and reduces human error in real time. This includes sending data to tools like SPLUNK and Grafana.
Implementing Private Cloud on "Z" explains the benefits of using the Velocity Software products to create a private cloud environment.
Mainframe to Cloud in 2 Days tells how Velocity Software was able to use our suite of products to move from a bare metal machine to a fully functioning environment in two days.
zPRO is the premiere z/VM modernization product on the market. It provides a secure PaaS (Platform as a Service), private Cloud enablement, Ansible access with SMAPI-free API's, LPAR, z/VM and Linux cloning, operational support and has features that outperform other vendor products - for a fraction of the total cost of ownership.
Accounting, Chargeback, & Capacity Planning With z/VPS
Accounting has become increasingly complex to measure on IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. Many numbers that were previously easy to identify must now be properly augmented against the real hardware being virtualized, something zVPS does extremely well. Data needs to be accurately collected and reported, along with an easy way to decifer that data. Velocity Software is easily the leader in providing resource-based chargeback, capacity planning and trending analysis with a full performance database. This allows for accurate resource consumption to be reported by virtual machine, by OpenShift container and pod, and for other applications running either in Linux or in any OpenShift environment.
Accounting for z/VM and Linux gives specifics on how to create accurate reports for servers/groups and desired resources for capacity planning and performance trending analysis.
Chargeback for z/VM and Linux explains how Velocity Software is used for customer chargeback.
Low Cost of Ownership of Running zVPS
Velocity Software saves installations money in multiple ways:
Low Utilization:
- Velocity Software data sources are the most efficient avaiable to ensure low cost of ownership.
- Velocity Software uses standard interfaces such as the CP Monitor, SMF and SNMP to provide savings in both resource requirements and development time. These savings are passed on to our customers.
- Due to the very low resource requirements, Velocity Software products can be run 24x7. We are not part of your performance problem; we are the solution that allows you to maintain SLA's.
- zVPS maintains the goal of only using 0.1% of a processor, compared to other products that require a starting point of 2 processors. Memory required for installation is measured in Mega Bytes (MB) compared to Giga Bytes (GB). Velocity's MIB's measured in Kilo Bytes (KB) per Linux server compared to other services that require up to 100MB per server. Hardware cost adds up quickly on Z, and needs to be considered when calculating your total cost of ownership.
- Velocity Software shows all the consumption for all services provided by our product stack for true accountability. The screenshot below shows how we group servers, with Velocity's group expanded by a simple click. Circled in red below is the amount of CPU being used by our entire zLOV suite of products, not just zVPS. A value of 100 would equal 100% of a processor and a value of 10 would equal 0.1% of a processor. The 0.51 shown here is still well within our goals.
Cost:
- Velocity Software provides performance management for many platforms at a fraction of the cost of our competitors - when there are competitors.
- Velocity software does not require any additional Linux guest. This means no additional cost for operating systems, JAVA, or databases. Velocity Software is a standalone, complete, end-to-end real-time performance, optimization, and modernization solution.
- Velocity Software provides product upgrades to support new hardware, new release of the operating system and new functions at no additional charge.
- Velocity Software support is always included in the standard lease agreement.
- Velocity Software products need no system modifications and are completely non-intrusive.
- Reduced implementation times, measured in minutes/hours not days/months.
- zVPS has multi-platform data collection to monitor different platforms (Linux, Windows, VMware, z/OS, VSE) and can process the collected data on z/VM at a low cost.
- Free trials and Proof of Concept (POCs).
- Velocity Software has many no-charge additional features.
Efficiency:
- Velocity Software always strives to provide simple and complete solutions.
- Velocity Software modernizes the platform so less expertise is needed.
- Running Linux servers on z/VM and using Velocity products greatly lowers an installation's footprint by optimizing the environment efficiently.

Data Monitoring for Additional Platforms and Applications
If it connects with SNMP (including many network printers, routers, etc), Velocity Software can measure it! For services important to your business, we might even be able to build a solution for you. Here is a list of examples of what is currently being measured:
- OpenShift
- Oracle
- MongoDB
- Docker
- zCX
- IBM Secure Containers
- Java Threads
- Windows Systems
- z/OS
- VSE
- Linux
- KVM: coming soon
- UNIX

Company Compliance
Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA)
Velocity Software adheres to mandated security requirements, including DORA. DORA was created by the European Union (EU) in 2022 to address a critical gap in financial regulations. This act requires that stringent guidelines be followed in relation to Information and Comunication Technology (ICT). It defines uniform requirements concerning the security of all networks and information systems.
Velocity Software runs on z/VM which runs on IBM Z and LinuxOne systems. The IBM mainframe system software/hardware environment provides significant resiliency and security options. Velocity Software takes advantage of these features. Internally, the entire Linux on Velocity Software (zLOV) stack provides comprehensive logging and audit controls across all functionality. The zLOV suite of products provide excellent risk management by supplying capacity planning to ensure data availability, operational alerts to detect/correct problems before they can cause damage and resource management to ensure data is constantly and consistently available. This has allowed Velocity Software to maintain compliance across all of our worldwide customers - in all industries, including the financial services sector and governments.
